In order to produce high quality cast and wrought strong and light weight alloys, it is necessary to improve their microstructure during both solidification and subsequent thermomechanical treatment. The structure of dispersion-strengthened aluminium alloys is controlled by an addition of modifying aluminium based master alloys with transient element, which form thermally stable disperse phases with aluminium inhibiting graub growth. The Al-Sc-Zr master alloys demonstrate that the modification with this master alloy make it possible to obtain a fine grain structure, to increase the recrystallization temperatue, to decrease the sensitivity to corrosion cracking, to influence aging process, and to improve the mechanical properties and weldability of aluminium alloys. A joint of addition of Sc and Zr plays a significant role in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu based alloys, providing the precipitation of a phase that prevents grain growth, which if of great importance for subsequent thermal treatment of precipitation-hardening aluminium alloys.


Processing Method:

Doping high purity scandium and zirconium to high purity aluminium, melting and mixing in intermediate frequency furnace, deslagging.


Application:

AlSc2Zr1 master alloy is used as strengthening modifiers in the manufacturing of high strength aluminium alloys.

Why is scandium added to aluminum?
